Geodesign: Making Footprints for a Better World

geo design

So geodesign imagines cities by incorporating the environment, distant populations, and future generations. Instead of considering what’s best, it considers what’s best down the road. Geodesign is also being used at the Cape Cod Commission, the area’s regional land-use planning, economic development, and regulatory agency.

Meet some Geodesign graduates who are transforming our world.

With classes in architecture, design, geographic information and public policy, the major has expanded my thinking in the process of creative problem-solving. Geodesign is a set of concepts and methods[1] used to involve all stakeholders and various professions in collaboratively designing and realizing the optimal solution for spatial challenges in the built and natural environments, utilizing all available techniques and data in an integrated process. Originally, geodesign was mainly applied during the design and planning phase.

Designing with Science

The substance of the Earth can now be structured and mapped using the important geo-spatial codings used in GIS to include detail about the surface of the planet, what lies below the surface, what is found in the atmosphere. Existing geo-spatial coding mechanisms will need extra definition to allow this additional information to be included so that depth and height can now be recorded. Many more stories about how geodesign techniques and GIS technology can be used together to support a more sustainable world were told at the Geodesign Summit. Videos of the Geodesign Summit will be posted in the near future on the Esri YouTube channel.

Technologies

Geo—Design aims to articulate the “geo—” (from the Greek gaîa for “earth”) and to bring it to bear on the agency of design in a world facing climate change. Such ability to respond, or response-ability, requires a  shift from the framing of the planet as “global” and “common” to ground, situated, and diffract geography, climate, and technology. Geo—Design  also begs a transformation of the framework through which design engages the Earth and climate––of the concepts, scales, domains, modes  of representation, methodologies, and formats of work.

Geodesign: Integrating Geography and Design

Geodesign is an up-and-coming field of study that combines geography with design (hence the term “Geodesign”. McGuinness analyzed remotely sensed imagery of publicly owned car parks in the United Kingdom, using machine learning classification methods and an image classification tool in ArcGIS Pro. He was looking for the car parks that would be the best situated for housing, one factor being that the parks needed to be within easy walking distance of public transit.

Geodesign brings together geographic information science (GIS), big data, science, computational power, architecture, landscape architecture, urban and regional planning and more to address challenges and issues presented by the built environment. It uses stakeholder input, creative design techniques, evaluation, rigorous methodologies, spatial analysis, modeling, and mapping to find the most suitable, environmentally friendly, and sustainable options for how to use space. The space may be used for wildlife conservation, development, infrastructure, flood control systems, or transportation projects, to name just a few examples.

In Global Geodesign is a highly structured academic program that requires a minimum of 128 units. Geography helps to explain the world around us and the impact of natural and manmade events. For example, we fragment the forest and pollute the air and oceans which impact ecosystems. But at the end of the century, scientists project that half of all species will face extinction. But by putting people’s needs as a top priority, it doesn’t look at the consequences of actions.

geo design

ESRI co-founder Jack Dangermond has introduced each of the GeoDesign Summit meetings. To graduate with this major, students must complete all university, college, and major requirements. This referential link between the entity being designed and its geographic context provides the tangible basis for doing both science-based and value-based design. Additionally, it has the ability to provide operational linkages to a wide variety of domain-specific information and, in so doing, serves as the multidisciplinary platform for doing integral (holistic) design.

The International Geodesign Collaboration: Changing Geography by Design

Last year, he did an analysis of car park space for the United Kingdom’s Ministry for Housing, Communities & Local Government (MHCLG). MHCLG and other government agencies and stakeholders are looking for development space for housing, which is very limited. Rendon said the lidar data not only showed what structures were damaged by the hurricane, but also, when mapped, gave the team insight into where and how the dunes along the coastline had shifted—or were pushed back—closer to the base by the hurricane’s force. Penn State Geodesign courses are online and most are asynchronous to allow flexibility for working professionals, enabling participation as individual schedules permit. Whether it was constructing elaborate forts as a child, singing in choirs, composing music, or designing treehouses, I’ve always found immense joy in the process of creating.

The base, which was in the eye of the storm, was slammed by winds that downed thousands of acres of nonnative timber. A project estimated at $3 billion is under way to repair the damage and make the base more resilient and less vulnerable to climate change, hurricanes, and other natural hazards. In the fall 2021 semester, Penn State graduate students explored real-world land use and planning challenges in revisioning Toronto’s waterfront through a 14-week geodesign collaborative studio.

The ability for geodesign to enable marginalised people to participate in the design process is seen as central to the levels of acceptance accorded to future projects by similar groups. Technology permits the collation and presentation of key data in a format that allows stakeholders to engage in “what if” type activities and see the results of their speculation rapidly. I chose Geodesign because of its solution oriented approach to cities and sustainability. The major emphasizes a value-based, creative design process grounded in geographic information. In a world increasingly driven by economic profit, I think this idealistic yet data-driven approach is vital in addressing environmental and social issues.

For instance, design constructs a place that is ideal for future purposes. Chung said the government had a large dataset that could be used to assess the hurricane’s damage to the base. “We have a massive amount of information—lidar—and we wanted to take advantage of that,” he said. This StoryMap won the 2023 Los Angeles Geospatial Summit Esri prize for the most innovative use of technology. Beyond the classroom, the program helped open up so many doors for me, allowing me to conduct research on Catalina Island, present at conferences like the Los Angeles Geospatial Summit and intern at Esri.

Because design and evaluation have traditionally been separate disciplines, this phase of a project can be time-consuming and tedious. Student chooses from courses listed in semesters 5-7 of the major's semester plan. Students will not be required to take more credits than required in semesters with less than 3 credits in electives. DCP advisors have a list of 1 and 2 credit electives in which students may enroll. Carl SteinitzCarl Steinitz is the Alexander and Victoria Wiley Professor of Landscape Architecture and Planning, Emeritus, at Harvard University Graduate School of Design. He has devoted much of his academic and professional career to improving decisions in conservation and development.
